How do you define your artistic style, how has it evolved ?

I started back painting 2 years ago after a 30 year hiatus! I use watercolours and my paintings are soft and delicate. When they are completed they are usually a surprise to me as I let the water and paint flow. When I went back painting I thought my work would be bright and vibrant but that’s not what happened!

Can you walk us through your creative process?

I go for daily walks and take photos of flowers and nature around me and use these photos as the basis of my work. I experiment with brushes and pallet knives, and always mix the colours I wish to use. Each piece of work is infused with Joy and Contentment as I get lost in the process and I like to portray the essence of the flower.

What steps do you take from the initial concept to the final product?

Using my photos as initial inspiration I experiment with creating the colours and usually work on 3 pieces together – the first one is about trying out the colours and brush techniques [or pallet knife]. The second pieces is all about shape and form and hopefully no three is the finshed work.

Are there specific environments, moods, or moments that spark your creativity most?

The specific mood that sparks my creativity most is a feeling of peace, and contentment with no rush or hurry and the time to get lost in the moment

Many artists have a particular theme or subject matter that they explore in their work. Is there a recurring theme in your art?

The recurring theme in my work is floral, initially based on my love for the beautiful flowers grown by my father Gabriel, [now deceased]. Some of the rose bushes in his garden are over 60 years old and still thriving.

What artists, past or present, have inspired or influenced your work?

I trained as a fashion designer in the then ‘Limerick School Of Art and Design’ and there we studied the various artists – my favourite would be Monet – as I love his techniques and colours.
I visit art galleries regularly and help run The Mountshannon Arts Festival and I love the work exhibited there by local artists especially the Mermaid Mosaic Sculptures by Sadhbh O’Neill – they are beautiful

In the evolving world of art, how do you stay current with new techniques or mediums, and have you recently experimented with any?

I experiment all the time with techniques for watercolours as I feel I am still learning. My painting is all about how it makes me feel, the flow of the work and blending of the colours.

Can you describe a moment in your career that you felt was a significant breakthrough or turning point for you?

I hosted my first solo art exhibition in October with a mix 12 original pieces and prints. I was thrilled with the response and have several solo exhibitions in the pipeline for 2024.

With so many diverse art forms and expressions, how do you decide which medium or method best conveys your vision for a particular piece?

I am sticking with watercolours for the moment as so far they work really well for my subject matter. However I will experiment with other techniques during the next 12 months to widen my experience and knowledge.

How do you hope viewers will interpret or respond to your work?

So far some of the comments about my work have included ‘Your artworks are full of light and beauty’, ‘Breathlessly beautiful. Such a sense of beauty from nature’ , ‘Beautiful and ethereal’
