How do you define your artistic style, how has it evolved ?
Irish artist sketching my daughters and our Irish Terriers. I create portraits, positive art card designs and illustrations.
Original artwork created with love from my home in Sallins, Co Kildare.
Can you walk us through your creative process?
I draw every day and post my sketches to my Instagram page @one_sketch_per_day_ .
To create my art I use a wide range from charcoal to watercolour to lino printing. I usually have an Irish Terrier looking up at me to hurry up! I also love to create one line art without lifting my hand off the page, sometimes I can get a nice fluid movement.
I love creating portraits of famous Irish musicians and actors that I admire.
What steps do you take from the initial concept to the final piece ?
I love music and the initial concept may come from song lyrics I hear while out for a walk. My two daughters and the love and laughs they have with my dogs are a daily source of inspiration.
Are there specific environments, moods, or moments that spark your creativity most?
I have a small window when my youngest daughter is at playschool, I listen to my music on headphones and I get all my ideas out on paper. Most of my ideas are rough sketches but sometimes I hit on something that I want to develop further. Many artists have a particular theme or subject matter that they explore in their work. Is there a recurring theme in your art?
I have an interest in illustrations that capture the innocence of childhood especially the relationship with family pets. What artists, past or present, have inspired or influenced your work?
I love the colours and the details of the stained-glass art work of Irish Harry Clarke. I also love Picasso Line art which has been a big influence to me. I also like Frida Kahlo because she inspires me to keep going! In the evolving world of art, how do you stay current with new techniques or mediums, and have you recently experimented with any?
I try many things from creating original art t-shirts for my daughters using posca pens. I try lino printing for creating unique cards and I like to experiment and keep trying new things.
