This original oil painting captures the rotation of a figure inspired by Kaori Sakamoto’s 2022 Olympic bronze medal performance with gentle after-image figures that fade into the dark background. The rich warm tones of the dress and skin glow against the black, and the bright white skates draw the eye along the lines of the figure. The dark background lends it a classical, timeless feeling, while the unique subject matter, colours and visible brushstrokes provide a more modern twist. An intriguing piece of artwork, it’s an excellent focal piece for a skating coaches office, figure skaters bedroom, or the home of a true fan of the sport – and at 45×60 cm it’s the perfect size to hang above a desk, couch, mantle piece, or add interest to a hallway.

Gráinne Nielsen is an oil painter who lives on the North West coast of Ireland, working from an impressively messy home studio. They spend the winter watching figure skating, the summers thinking about watching figure skating, and almost all of the rest of their time painting figure skating. Sometimes they paint other things they think are pretty, just to keep it fresh.
