Description

This painting compresses five centuries of Caribbean history into a single shore — the bay of Samaná, in the Dominican Republic, where European ships first reached the land and where the artist’s father was born. Read from the mountain peak downward and left to right, it moves through time: a Taíno figure stands sovereign on the height; a caravel arrives bearing the red cross of conquest; a coloniser steps onto the sand; the enslaved are marched inland along a cobbled path. Yet the island’s people endure — living by the sea with their sacred cemís, and dancing to merengue beneath a Caribbean house, alive and unbroken. Crowning the composition, a figure breaks their chains against a blue moon.

Painted in a naïve, folk register rooted in Afro-Caribbean and Taíno cultural memory, the work holds discovery, extermination, and cultural survival in a single frame. It is a history of loss, but also of what could not be erased — the music, the belief, the people who remain.

Yahaira Lidia Reyes-Forkan (b. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a self-taught painter based in Leixlip, Co. Kildare, Ireland. After more than two decades living in the Netherlands and Ireland, the Caribbean of her childhood and the Europe of her adult life appear together in the work — the warmth of the one meeting the restraint of the other. She paints women, music, and landscape, working primarily in acrylic on canvas with palette knife and incorporating gold leaf, glitter, crystal, and metallic pigment. Each piece is one of a kind; she does not produce editions or prints. Her current body of work centres on Afro-Caribbean and Taíno cultural identity, exploring ancestral memory, ceremony, and the visual language of the first inhabitants of Quisqueya. This work will be presented in her debut solo exhibition, Afro-Taíno, at Leixlip Library, Co. Kildare, opening Thursday 7 January 2027. She signs her work Y.L.R.

The Works All original paintings and Everydays goods sold through this website are one of a kind. Colours may vary slightly between screens. Dimensions are provided for each work and are as accurate as possible. 2. Pricing and Payment Prices are listed in Euro (€) and include VAT where applicable. Payment is processed securely through [Webador / Stripe / PayPal — insert your payment processor]. I reserve the right to cancel an order if a pricing error has occurred, in which case a full refund will be issued. 3. Shipping I ship from Ireland. Shipping Policy

Packaging
Every original painting and Everydays item is carefully packaged by hand before dispatch. Original canvases are wrapped in glassine paper, cushioned with bubble wrap, and shipped in a rigid box or reinforced tube depending on the size and format of the work. I take packaging seriously — your piece should arrive exactly as it left my studio.
Processing Time
Orders are processed within 3–5 working days of payment being confirmed. Commissions and larger works may require additional time — I will communicate this clearly before dispatch.

Tracking
All shipments include tracking. You will receive your tracking number by email once your order has been dispatched. Please allow up to 24 hours for tracking information to update after dispatch.
Customs, Duties, and Import Taxes
For deliveries outside the European Union, customs duties, import taxes, or other charges may apply upon arrival in your country. These charges are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in the purchase price or shipping cost. I am not able to predict or control these charges — please check with your local customs authority before ordering if you are unsure.
All customs declarations will accurately state the contents and value of the shipment. I am unable to mark items as gifts or undervalue them on customs forms.
Damage in Transit

Keep all packaging materials until the matter is resolved
I will work with you promptly to resolve the situation, which may include a refund, repair, or insurance claim depending on the circumstances. Claims made after 48 hours cannot be accepted.
Lost Shipments
If your tracked shipment shows no movement for more than 10 working days beyond the estimated delivery window, please contact me and I will investigate with the courier or postal service on your behalf.

Return Policy

Original Fine Art

All original paintings are one of a kind. I take great care in describing and photographing each work accurately, including dimensions, medium, and texture. Please review all images and details carefully before purchasing.
Returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery, provided:
The work is returned in its original condition and packaging
You notify me at [email protected] within 14 days of delivery
Return shipping is arranged and paid by the buyer
The work arrives back safely — you are responsible for the work until it is received by me.
Once the returned work has been inspected and confirmed undamaged, a full refund of the purchase price will be issued within 14 days. Original and return shipping costs are non-refundable.

Commissions are non-refundable once work has begun. A deposit of 50% is required to begin a commission. If you cancel before work begins, the deposit will be refunded in full.

Damage in Transit
If your artwork arrives damaged, please photograph the damage and the packaging immediately and contact me at [email protected] within 48 hours of delivery. I will work with you to resolve the matter, which may include a refund, replacement, or insurance claim depending on the circumstances.

Your Statutory Rights
Nothing in this policy affects your statutory rights under Irish and EU consumer protection law, including your right to cancel an online purchase within 14 days under the EU Consumer Rights Directive. This right does not apply to custom or bespoke commissions made to your specification.
