Description
Crimson, pink and orange hues, bringing heat and passion with darkness looming. A composition of acrylic paint, plaster, sand and pastels, inspired by the volatility of the moment and the mysteriousness of the hidden. Exploring an intense, yet playful way how colours create light and shadows while drawing you into hidden depths.
In her mixed media works, Katja Wittmer creates colour compositions that invite to curiously explore beyond what is apparent at first glance. Playing with form, texture and abstraction, Katja Wittmer develops the wonderful complexity of colour -in an interplay that extends through several layers, she achieves a unique and highly individual compositional power, creating her own unmistakable style of abstract modern art.

My artistic inspiration draws from exploring my inner self, creating paintings with a powerful personal emotional impact. I am fascinated with how colour and form alone can trigger an individual emotional response based on personal experiences. Using bold colours, dripping paint, sand, plaster and wax I create complex textures and hidden layers within my abstract paintings that are waiting to be discovered. I am intrigued by the process of covering and revealing— by layering textured paint and then stripping it back I offer a glimpse into what lies hidden underneath the surface. Using this technique I create unique works of abstract expressionism which challenge the boundaries of perception. My work is engaging and challenging, leaving plenty of opportunity for individual interpretation and reflection. “The joy of abstract Art is that everyone can find their own story in what they see.” Born in 1972 in Erlangen, Germany, Katja Wittmer studied internationally in Germany and Brazil and completed her Fine Arts Degree under the Betty Hood Poorman scholarship at Auburn University, USA, with cum laude honours (1993-1997). She travelled the world before coming to Ireland in 2007 and lives and works in Ennis, Co Clare.
