Palm wine is a traditional alcoholic beverage made from the sap of various species of palm trees, such as the oil palm or raffia palm. It is widely consumed in Africa, Asia and other tropical regions. The process begins with tapping the palm tree: a tapper makes an incision in the tree’s trunk and attaches a container (often a gourd or bottle) to collect the sap, which naturally ferments due to wild yeast. Within hours, the sap turns into a mildly sweet, slightly fizzy and alcoholic drink. It can be consumed fresh or further fermented for a stronger taste. Palm wine is often enjoyed in social and cultural gatherings, symbolizing community and tradition.
