I spent several months on this piece to capture the elegance and energy of the figure through both shape and colour. Shown in mid spin in the layback position, the many layers of oil paint allow her to almost glow on the canvas. I’ve included images of the painting in both a brightly lit and a shadier area, to highlight the subtlety of the tones in the background which can shift from a deep blue to a striking turquoise depending on the time of day, making this a really interesting piece to view over and over again.
Inspired by the skating of Satoko Miyahara.

Gráinne Nielsen is an oil painter who lives on the North West coast of Ireland, working from an impressively messy home studio. They spend the winter watching figure skating, the summers thinking about watching figure skating, and almost all of the rest of their time painting figure skating. Sometimes they paint other things they think are pretty, just to keep it fresh.
