Description

Pastéis de Nata are a traditional and incredibly popular Portuguese treat: flaky pastry filled with a creamy egg custard. Trust me, you have to try them when you visit!

The ones that inspired this painting are from Pastelaria Capri on Avenida Almirante Reis in Lisbon – you’ll thank me for the tip later. The moment you step inside, you’re enveloped by the enticing aroma of coffee, and you’re greeted by a display of mouthwatering Portuguese delicacies, from Pastéis de Nata to Bolas de Berlim. You can enjoy your Pastéis with a bica, a strong espresso, or a meio de leite, coffee with milk.

Fun fact: the original recipe from the Jerónimos Monastery has been a closely guarded secret since 1837, passed down only to the master pastry chef at the Pastéis de Belém boutique!
