BIO

David was born in Melbourne, Australia and currently lives in Galway, Ireland with his wife and 3 young boys. Art is his safe place, where he can truly be himself without judgement or expectation. He likes to explore his own personal experience of what it is like to be a man, living a busy life, in the modern world and aims to create an individual visual world that is truly unique to himself. He is inspired by events in his life such as a family wedding, visiting a sporting match, listening to a live band or simply eating dinner with his wife and sons. Inspiration can come from anywhere, architecture, food, animals, faces or culture. David likes to undertake a visual exploration until a conclusion or narrative is formed.

Artist – Statement

I am Interested in a lot of different things and my work often has themes such as sport, politics, spirituality and masculinity. My artwork incapsulates my own personal world and tends to examine emotions such as fear, frustration and anger.

I am influenced by many different artists and styles. However I do identify with modern contemporary Australian Artists such as Gareth Sansom, Ben Quilty, David Griggs or Brad Teodoruk.

At the beginning of a work, I generally have a very vague idea of what an artwork will be and allow shapes, contrast, colours, line or the occasional word to make a suggestion. I work spontaneously and intuitively as ideas are added, extracted, connected or separated until an overall idea, feeling or narrative is reached. I allow a work to reveal itself within the process through a personal conversation before settling on its main idea or subject. I currently mostly use acrylic paint, collage, markers and charcoal.

My artwork incapsulates my own personal world and my thoughts feelings and relationship to it. The art then becomes like therapy were I am forced to connect, recognise and engage with feelings and thoughts. My personal experience is unique to me only and therefore I aspire to produce work that matches this ideal.
